In some parts of the country, New Year's tradition of college football. In others, he is the NHL Winter Classic ... But in Philadelphia, he is probably the Mummers Parade. This weekend marks the 111th Mummers Day Parade as the string bands fancy brigades was walking Comics & Broad Street fantasies in celebrating the new year.
The roots of the Mummers Parade back to the tradition of "Mummer's Play" in England, the smallest, the season of carnival-style were found to be played. Colonial Philadelphia began dressing in clothing style carnival and went from door to door contact to mini-shows to make fun of England's King George. It seemed to the old Swedish tradition of "second Christmas" combine to prevent the roots of what we know now, how are the Mummers Day Parade.
Surprisingly, women were not really allowed in the parade until 1970.
The first official Mummers Parade was in 1901, the longest survival Trilby String Band, while the Ferko String Band, the most successful of 1923, has not missed a parade in the top 5 and 82 of 88 saves.
The parade will follow its traditional route north on Broad Street, the great festival which the second center and Mifflin streets.
