A Puyallup School District Committee takes another year to study on a proposed change in high schools to middle schools.

A Puyallup School District Committee takes another year to study on a proposed change in high schools to middle schools.

The 15-strong group of parents, teachers and administrators who work in October began asking last week, more time to study the idea.

The group was initially expected, the results of their work Puyallup School Superintendent Tony Apostle report in January 2012 and is now March 2013.

Apostle sent a memo to employees and community members, given the public outrage on the reconfiguration of schools.

"It must be asked and concerns of the Commission, before we look ahead with a final plan," said the note.

Criticism of the proposed college was from several fronts.

Some parents said they initially were not the case group, sixth graders - who is now in primary schools in Puyallup - graders with seventh and eighth. The model is popular with school districts, both regionally and nationally.

The measure would also move ninth graders from junior to senior levels. Educators say it's a plus, because students must pass to obtain high school credits and would be beneficial in an environment of high school.

But critics wonder if the quality would be reconfiguring the overcrowding and double shifts in Puyallup three comprehensive schools, district officials acknowledge, are already out of capacity.

Apostle said there have been so public, it asked the Committee to adopt a plan for receiving public comment.

Committee meetings are not available to the public, said spokeswoman Karen Hansen district, but the summaries are published on the website of the district.

The Committee requested a long list of questions, including how the switch would be considered impact assessment, planning, athletics and other school activities, certification of school staff, the facilities and budget.

"Once the report is completed, my office will review its findings and submit to the Executive Board for consideration and possible decision," said the apostle in his note.

If management is allowed the transition to middle school, officials estimate that it would proceed to 18 months to two years. That would mean, will take place, the sooner the change would be the year 2014-15 the school, the memo notes Apostle.

The Bethel School District is the only Pierce County, the model of junior high for other purposes. She conducted a study in 2009-10 and in December decided on its board to recommend a change in middle schools.

The Bethel School Board has scheduled a public hearing on the subject in mid-March to keep, said spokeswoman Krista Carlson.
